my epiphany
I had an epiphany during spring of 2007 to become a shoemaker! Since then I’ve learned this nearly extinct trade from several shoemakers in New England. I knew I was destined to become a shoemaker when I learned that my grandfather was a cobbler in Canada and that I share my birthday with St. Crispin, the patron saint of cobblers. I now hand craft elegant shoes for women using my grandfather's shoemaking tools inside my “Sole of Vermont” studio in Manchester, Vermont. Using old world techniques blended with more than 25 years of professional design experience, beautiful, unique one-of-a-kind shoes are born.
I’m inspired by shoe styles of the 1940’s through 1960’s and create each pair as an original work of art, from the whimsical to the elegant, incorporating vintage leathers, silks, furs and shoe clips into my designs. I make various styles of flats and sandals. Oh, and the food connection... Since I love food and have a passion for cooking, it made perfect sense to name my shoes after my favorite foods and each comes with it's own unique list of ingredients!
I can be found most days in my modern studio which my husband Alan (Sustainable Design) and I built using sustainable techniques. Adorned with a crystal chandelier and vintage fashion art, stepping inside is reminiscent of a city boutique. I would be delighted to welcome you to my studio and show you some shoes!
